Videocello explores the unlimited potential of a computer interactive setup and the Tucker Barrett e-cello. The video sequence is triggered by the performer from the fingerboard of the e-cello. A pitch-to-MIDI convertor changes the output of the e-cello into MIDI messages the computer interprets. The computer is programmed to randomly select the order of the video sequence. Sampled sounds triggered from the fingerboard and digital delay lines help to create a layered effect. The sound of the e-cello is modulated in realtime using digital sound processors and MIDI pedals. The aim of the work is to find a balance between random events generated by technology and the structure imposed by the improvisation of the performer.
Videocello was created under the auspices of a 1996 Connecticut Commission on the Arts Artist Fellowship Grant. It was premiered at Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut on February 10, 1999. Since then it has been performed numerous times. In 2001 the work was selected by American Composer's Forum Sonic Circuits Series to be performed at the Kennedy Center.
