Suddenly It's Evening for solo e-cello by Donald Erb available on iTunes

Suddenly It's Evening by Donald Erb for solo e-cello is now available for download on iTunes. Here is what the composer, who turns 80 this year, writes about the music.

Suddenly It’s Evening (1997) was a commission from the Fromm Foundation and was composed for Jeffrey Krieger and his electronic cello. The title is taken from a poem by Salvatore Quasimodo and is only three lines in length. The English translation is:
Each of us is alone on the heart of the earth
pierced by a ray of sun:
and suddenly it’s evening.
The titles of the four movements are meant to give the audience some insight into the character of each movement. The first movement Xanax in Xanadu is introspective, rather sad, with a chilly end to it. Interlude, the second movement which separates two slow movements, is fiery, virtuosic and designed to show the cellist off as a dazzling good one. Winter in My Heart is sad music, written perhaps about the concerns of an old person; and Eyes of Flame which follow is fierce and fast and is, again, meant to be a showcase for the cellist.

A review in the Cleveland Plain Dealer by Music Critic, Donald Rosenberg said about a performance in 2001 at the Cleveland Museum of Art the following. "It is a beautiful creation concerned with musical communication rather than mere equipment."

A review in the Philadelphia Inquirer began: “Donald Erb is the kind of composer who can create great music with just about anything”. And Erb has written for “just about anything”. His orchestral music has been played by literally every major orchestra in the United States and many in Europe, Asia and Australia as well. He has had commissions from the Chicago Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, the Dallas Symphony, the Houston Symphony, and the Atlanta Symphony, among others. His most recent orchestral work Evensong was commissioned for the 75th anniversary of the Cleveland Orchestra and has been recorded on the Koch label by the New Zealand Symphony. Among his works for orchestra are ten concertos which have been premiered by such artists as Lynn Harrell, Richard Stoltzman, Miriam Fried, Stuart Dempster, and the brass section of the Chicago Symphony.
Erb, formerly head of composition at the Cleveland Institute of Music, has received grants and fellowships from the Rockefeller, Guggenheim, Ford, Fromm, and Koussevitzky Foundations, and has served as composer-in-residence with the Dallas and St. Louis Symphony Orchestras. Among the many organizations which have honored him are the International Rostrum of Composers, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Library of Congress, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the American Academy in Rome. He is the author of the article on orchestration in the Encyclopedia Brittanica.
